Australian Missile Manufacturing and Strike Capability

Australia is rapidly accelerating the acquisition of long-range precision strike capabilities as part of the 2026 National Defence Strategy and Integrated Investment Program. Over the next decade, the Australian Government will invest $425 billion in Defence capability including guided weapons, integrated air and missile defence, long-range strike systems and the sovereign industrial capabilities needed to support them. 

Recent investments include $2.3 billion to acquire the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) and establish a second Long Range Fires Regiment, $1.3 billion for Tomahawk cruise missiles, up to $650 million for additional AARGM-ER missiles, and billions more to establish Australia's sovereign Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Enterprise. Together, these capabilities will provide the Australian Defence Force with the ability to strike targets at significantly greater ranges across land and maritime domains. 

Recognising increasing pressure on global supply chains and a more contested strategic environment, Australia is also investing heavily in domestic manufacturing. The Government is expanding sovereign production of guided weapons, including the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS), while partnering with allies on future missile technologies, advanced propulsion, hypersonic systems and integrated air and missile defence.

For Australian industry, this represents one of the nation's largest advanced manufacturing opportunities. Beyond missile production, significant investment is flowing into research and development, propulsion systems, electronics, energetics, testing and evaluation, logistics, sustainment, workforce development and critical industrial infrastructure—creating a resilient sovereign ecosystem capable of supporting Australia's long-range strike capability for decades to come.
